US-69 Missouri River Bridge Replacement
PLATTE COUNTY, MO & WYANDOTTE COUNTY, KS
Engineering recommendations, geotechnical exploration and lab testing for the design-build of a new major bridge connecting Kansas and Missouri.
The southbound Route 69 Bridge, commonly referred to as the Fairfax Bridge, was built in 1933. The northbound Route 69 Bridge, commonly referred to as the Platte Purchase Bridge, was built in 1957. Both were built to accommodate the type, size, and weight of vehicles at the time of construction, and were not designed for the high volume and heavy weight limits of truck traffic that you typically find today within the heavy industrial zone where these bridges are located. Narrow lanes and load limitations restrict the use of each bridge by overweight and oversized vehicles. Because of their age, both structures required frequent maintenance and costly repairs, causing motorists further delay.
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) decided to replace the U.S. 69 bridges over the Missouri River between Platte County, Mo. and Wyandotte County, Kan. Construction began fall 2014 and the new bridge opened to traffic in December 2016. Terracon provided geotechnical exploration and engineering recommendations and laboratory testing in the design-build project. We provided geotechnical design for the main river bridge, modifications to the existing levees, three MSE retaining walls, a soil nail wall, and an overpass bridge for the realignment of Argosy Parkway for the project.
BNSF Logistics Park Kansas City
Environmental due diligence, geotechnical exploration and more to help bring a $250-million Logistics Park to KC.
The $250-million BNSF Logistics Park Kansas City (LPKC) Intermodal Facility was designed to accommodate the growing demands of freight rail transportation in the Kansas City region. The intermodal facility encompasses 433 acres and will have an initial capacity of 500,000 truck containers and trailers per year, with the ability to expand to 1.5 million units. The LPKC facility has six 8,000-foot tracks for loading and unloading intermodal trains, more than 1,800 parking spaces, and will have 4,300 container stacking spots at full build-out. It is equipped with five wide-span, electric, rail-mounted gantry cranes, which BNSF says produce zero emissions on site.
Terracon provided the environmental due diligence services for the project site, as well as geotechnical exploration services that included providing preliminary foundation design considerations for the buildings, utility lines backfill recommendations, pavement design parameters based on traffic data provided by the client, and foundation design parameters for several bridges through the site. Terracon also performed third-party materials testing and inspection services which included placement and testing of fill, shallow footing inspections, reinforcing steel and concrete placement and testing of the reinforced concrete.
