Why Kansas City?

We know Kansas City. Since 1970, Henderson Engineers has called Kansas City home. We have two offices and more than 500 employees in our local community. This is our city — where we choose to live, work, raise our families, and make a difference.

Giving back to Kansas City has been at the heart of our culture since Henderson was founded. We provide 16 hours of paid volunteer time annually for all our employees to help make our city better. Last year, our employees volunteered more than 2,000 hours to assist 100 local non-profits. Within the community, our employees also have extensive involvement and/or board positions with more than 50 local organizations and regularly serve as STEM/STEAM mentors to encourage and inspire the next generation of engineers.

We’ve designed KC’s iconic buildings. Wherever you look in Kansas City, you’ll see our stamp on local landmarks. Our team has designed the building systems for marquee buildings that have become part of the city’s landscape.

Henderson has been a global leader in innovation. Share with us some of the highlights.

Henderson Engineers is always pushing ourselves to innovate when we're creating design solutions for our clients. Just a few recent innovations that we've been involved with are listed below:

  • Hy-Vee Arena: Fire Code Modification (resulted in $2M savings for owner Steve Foutch; was also the first arena ever to add a full second floor to seating bowl)

  • Golden 1 Center: Under Seat Air Distribution (home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and 1st LEED Platinum arena in the world; also 1st entirely solar-powered arena and practice facility in the world)

  • Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park: Phase Change Material (we developed a seat cooling technology to help with fan comfort in this stadium; the technology was not ultimately implemented on the LA stadium but it was awarded a US patent)

  • BE Smith Family Center at AdventHealth: Specialty Lighting (as a resources for families of kids with special needs, this facility needed unique lighting including LEDs that could have different tones of light, day lighting controls, dimmable zones that could be adjusted for different learning settings and times of day — all to help provide a calming environment that avoids triggers and distractions for these children).

Please share a handful of projects that represent the work of Henderson.

Teaming up with the biggest name in sports to design several different retail store formats.

Nike is a brand fueled by competitors who innovate and inspire; everyday humans who don’t settle for better than average but strive for true greatness. At Henderson Engineers, we strive for greatness, too, that’s why we teamed up with the biggest name in sports apparel to design a space where athletes of all backgrounds can find the resources they need to reach their full potential. In a collaborative effort between our New York counterpart, HNY Consulting Engineers, we’ve successfully completed several different store formats including inline, factory stores, and flagships.

Contracted directly by Nike for all Nike Factory Store projects throughout the U.S. and Canada, our successful relationship continues to push the envelope of brick-and-mortar retail. The scope of each project ranges from minor sales area updates to complete overhauls of the store layout across several nationwide locations. The building systems design for spaces such as these requires careful coordination, focused attention to detail, and creative solutions to seamlessly integrate the building systems with the architectural design. The team has provided complex engineering solutions for Nike, while keeping serviceability and maintainability top of mind. Henderson also developed a pilot mechanical design for Nike Factory Stores that is expected to reduce energy consumption by 27% with a 2.5 year payback. As a direct result of Henderson’s innovative designs, every new Nike Factory Store is LEED Gold Certified with several stores having achieved LEED Platinum certification level.

Our design approach focused on incorporating efficient and flexible systems that could keep up with the ever-changing use of the spaces. With advanced lighting controls, the space can easily be transformed to showcase the latest trends, provide a comfortable shopping experience, or make a statement. nSpecial attention was also given to the energy efficiency of the building’s custom glass panels, a design element exclusive to Nike Flagship stores. nKnown for breaking down barriers, Nike is a company that is redefining what it means to be an athlete.

HCA Healthcare

A 20+ year relationship with one of the nations leading healthcare providers to improve existing facilities and build new.

HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers. With more than 170 hospitals and 120 freestanding clinics, HCA has a presence across the United States and the United Kingdom.

Henderson Engineers has worked with HCA for more than 20 years. Over that time, we’ve not only helped improve existing facilities, but have also worked with their design and construction team to build new ones. Together with Henderson Building Solutions, our wholly owned subsidiary, we’ve boosted operations for more than 200 HCA facilities.

HCA began working with us through infrastructure improvement projects with Henderson Building Solutions. During these projects, our construction managers work closely with HCA through a detailed planning process that covers development phases, temporary facilities used during construction, and key timing milestones. Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions collaborate to design and determine logistics of construction to reduce project risks. This is a key reason our teams consistently hit budget parameters, are able to minimize change orders, and nearly eliminate other corrective measures. Because of the success of these projects, our relationship with HCA has grown to include designing new construction, remodels, and major expansions.

Golden 1 Center

An entirely solar-powered arena and practice facility unlike any other in the NBA.

HE_Golden 1 Center Interior.jpg

The Golden 1 Center is a venue unlike any other in the NBA. It’s the first entirely solar-powered arena and practice facility in the world. It’s also the first LEED Platinum arena in the world. And it’s the first American arena to have an under-seat air distribution system, which was designed by Henderson Engineers in collaboration with AECOM. To top off the trailblazing, the innovative design delivers an overall 15% energy savings beyond Title 24.

The overall goal for the design was to orchestrate a unique and memorable fan experience. We emphasized advanced technology throughout including a 4K video board, wireless connectivity, and an individualized app for fans to use during games.

Other key components of this 17,500-seat arena include new locker room facilities, practice courts, suites, restaurant/clubs, concessions, restrooms, administrative offices, retail, press and media facilities, central plant, and parking garage.

We were proud to lead the building systems and technology design for this landmark project. To date, the arena has exceeded all anticipated patron counts and continues to win industry honors.

Manhatta - 28 Liberty Plaza

A fine dining restaurant and event space on the top floor of a 60-story building originally constructed in 1961.

Located in the center of New York’s Financial District, 28 Liberty was originally constructed in 1961 and, at 813 feet, remains one of the tallest buildings in the world. This presents a number of unique challenges when attempting to upgrade the functional systems throughout the building, including those in Manhatta - an elegant, upscale restaurant elevated 60 stories above lower Manhattan.

Partnering with our New York affiliate, HNY Consulting Engineers, Henderson Engineers led the timely design of all functional systems throughout the renovation of the site, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing. We also provided fire and sprinkler protection engineering services for the space.

Designing a fine dining restaurant and event space on the top floor of a 60-story building requires significant infrastructure and close coordination with the building’s owners and tenants. HNY managed tight coordination with the architectural model to deliver a high traffic space that minimized impact on the occupants on the floors immediately below Manhatta.

Throughout design, Henderson and HNY made 28 Liberty’s dynamic view a priority and creatively tailored systems and ceiling coordination to maximize roof space. Additional project assignments included the design a separate lobby entrance with dedicated elevator access to the 60th floor.

Los Angeles Stadium & Entertainment

A cutting edge entertainment experience that sets a new standard.

In 2021, a palatial NFL stadium will open in Inglewood, California, and will set a new standard for all sports facilities worldwide. The state-of-the-art LA Stadium & Entertainment District at Hollywood Park will be home to the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers and will also hosts a variety of other entertainment events.

As a multi-purpose stadium, the engineering and technology systems are designed to not only create an enjoyable environment for up to 100,000 fans, but also allow for flexibility in the venue. Henderson Engineers led the building systems design for the stadium's club spaces, suites and VIP areas, press box, concessions, locker rooms, and underground parking.

Our systems support a transparent canopy that shelters fans from the elements while also allowing natural sunlight to wash across the field during the game. The canopy is made from durable and sustainable flourine-based plastic to minimize environmental impact.

The completed LA Stadium will serve as the centerpiece of a 298-acre entertainment district that's part of the redevelopment efforts in Los Angeles. The development will include a 6,000-seat performing arts center, 2,500 residential spaces, 2 million SF of retail and office space, an open air plaza, and 25-acres of public parks.
