"FOR ME, DRAWING IS THINKING, AND PENCILS ARE THE WORLD'S BEST PORTABLE PROBLEM SOLVERS."
DESIGN LEADER, PRINCIPAL

What's been your most rewarding project(s) while at your firm?
I believe the DLR Group approach of integrated design, with the key disciplines at the table from the project kickoff is the best process for delivering innovative, sustainable design. It encourages involvement with the client which leads to better outcomes. nMy focus has been sports design for my entire career. I’ve been in Kansas City since 2001 after working for the firm in Florida for several years designing MLB spring training facilities.
Baseball is my passion and I have been lucky enough to design more than 20 baseball parks. We do a lot of collegiate work and that never fails to recharge my creative batteries. It’s gratifying to know that we’ve left our mark at USC, Creighton, Penn State, Florida, Nebraska, and on other campuses. DLR Group has also been a design partner with ISC and NASCAR. Our design of Kansas Speedway gave fans access to the experience of racing they had never had before. Now that same fan experience concept is being incorporated at track around the country nMy favorite project is Fluor Field in Greenville South Carolina. The minor league ballpark was an economic engine for the entire West End of Downtown Greenville. It was one of the first projects in what has become a vibrant part of the City.
In 2010 the Greenville News stated that “Fluor Field has become the front porch of Greenville.” I cannot think of a better compliment for a project.
Most interesting place you've traveled for work?
I am empowered by the impact of design. Since 2011, I’ve worked with a K-9 school in Torbeck, Haiti to design classrooms, a kitchen and dining hall, and we have enlisted the help of local tradesmen to complete projects. What we do can make difference. A lot of the time we are so busy meeting deadline we can lose sight of that. What we do is extremely important.
What inspires you about your profession?
For me, drawing is thinking, and pencils are the world's best portable problem solver.
